The Neapolitan pizza craze is in full force across America today. However, that wasn’t always true. In recent years the popularity of Neapolitan Pizza has flourished. Before it might have been only easy to find in New Haven & New York. Today, there are new Neapolitan Pizza shops opening around the country.
Neapolitan Pizza was first created out of the materials left in bread bakeries across Italy. Not using all your ingredients was a wasteful practice and bakers soon took to using left over dough as a basis of a new food, pizza. In the late 1880’s the pizza that is now called “Neapolitan Pizza” started popping up around Italy.
Fast forward to the 1920’s where Frank Pepe himself started making his “apizza” to diners in New Haven. Originally made with tomatoes, grated cheese, garlic, oregano, and olive oil, Frank Pepe soon started adding anchovy and other toppings to the menu.
Today, Neapolitan Pizza is a staple of popular food across America. With Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana leading the way, Neapolitan Pizza is sure to be a mainstay for generations to come.
